The following questions have been answered by Dr. B. Peter MiraMed / Salzburg.

FAQ: Is it possible that fat pads fill up again after the operation?

Definitely not. Extracted fatty tissue cannot grow back. If the patient gains a lot of weight, however, fat pads may develop somewhere else.

 ^

FAQ: Is the operation painful?

Most of the time liposuction does not cause any kind of pain. If you do feel pain after the operation, contact the surgeon immediately.

 ^

FAQ: Which patients can benefit from liposuction?

For adult patients with persistent fat pads liposuction can be a successful alternative to sports and special diets. This is true of women and men.

 ^

FAQ: Which patients are not suited for treatment?

Liposuction should not be performed on people under age, obese patients who want to lose a lot of weight, and patients suffering from severe medical conditions that increase the risk of the operation.

 ^

FAQ: Which type of anaesthesia has proven to be most suitable?

Tumescent local anaesthesia is used most frequently around the world. It is essential for an optimal liposuction. The complication rate is much lower compared to similar techniques. At the same time, it leads to perfect aesthetic results.

 ^

FAQ: Is liposuction suited to lose weight?

The aim of liposuction is to shape the body and tighten the skin, not to lose weight. It is unsuitable for a substantial weight loss.

 ^

FAQ: How long does the operation last?

Depending on the part of the body where it is performed it lasts between two and three hours.

 ^

FAQ: How many postoperative controls are necessary?

The first control takes place four to six weeks after the operation. A few months later a second control is required. This may change slightly from patient to patient.

 ^

FAQ: What has to be considered after the operation?

The most important thing is wearing a special elastic garment at all times. There may be other recommendations depending on the individual case. If you wish to go on a journey, please inform the doctor so that all treatments can be scheduled accordingly.

 ^

FAQ: Are there going to be any permanent scars or other traces of the operation?

The incisions are made in such a way that no visible scars remain after a few months. If bruises form during the operation, they will equally fade away after a few weeks at the latest. The healing process of the affected area lasts for about four to six months. Then the only visible phenomenon in the former problem area is the 'slimming effect'.

 ^

FAQ: When can the (final) result of the operation first be evaluated?

After one or two days the swelling caused by the operation has gone down to such a degree that the new body shape can be clearly recognised. A postoperative swelling may appear on the third day which then subsides within a few days. Bruises and swellings caused by oedemas may delay the healing process for some weeks. The best possible result of liposuction in the tummy area shows after about four months. At that time, the skin has managed to adapt to the new body shape. The final aesthetic result can be evaluated after four to six weeks.

FAQ: Which parts of the body can be treated?

Theoretically, all fat pads from head to toe can be removed. However, liposuction is most frequently performed on sagging cheeks, double chins, fat pads on the upper arms, on sides, bellies, buttocks, hips, thighs, the knee area, and the calves.

 ^

FAQ: Is one operation sufficient?

If the fat pads are unusually large or several problem areas have to be treated, one operation may not be enough. Otherwise, all necessary steps can be performed in one surgical treatment.

 ^

FAQ: Which preparations do I have to take prior to liposuction?

We require detailed information about your state of health. Thus we can determine which measures (i.e. taking blood) are necessary prior to the treatment session. You should have a light breakfast or lunch on the day of the operation. Fasting should be avoided. You should wear comfortable and wide clothing, which can be easily washed.

 ^

FAQ: What is preferable: a special diet or liposuction?

A diet is suitable for a general weight loss. Since particular fat pads cannot be targeted, the shape of particular body parts cannot be influenced. Through dieting we often lose weight in unwanted places, while problem areas stubbornly remain. Therefore, liposuction does not result in a general weight loss, but improves the shape of particular body parts by removing annoying deposits of fat.

FAQ: What happens with the excess skin after liposuction?

In cases of normal skin elasticity, it adapts to the new body shape without visible excess skin. This is favourably influenced by a gentle treatment method. As a supportive measure, a corsage has to be worn for merely two to four weeks.
